Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this metal working class:

Through the making of this small steel cube, you will learn a tremendous set of welding skills that can used to make anything in metal. Whether it is a custom dining table, a lamp or a sculpture.

The essential building blocks are quickly provided in this 4 hour long class that is purely focused on rapid learning. Participants will take a 20’ length of 1” x 1” x 1/8” steel tube and turn it into a beautiful 6” x 6” x 6” cube.

The skills you will  focus on learning are:

  • Measuring
  • Cutting
  • Fitting
  • Clamping
  • MIG welding
  • Grinding. Lots of grinding.

All metal projects require lots of grinding and you’ll get plenty of practice.

What to Bring and Wear:

  • Please wear proper attire that is suitable to work in a metal shop such as jeans, work clothes and close-toed shoes, preferably boots. Do not wear anything polyester, flammable or baggy. Long hair must be securely tied.  This is a metal shop and there is metal dust in the shop.  If you wear white pants, they will be grey by the end of class.
  • All the other safety stuff (helmets, gloves, etc.) are provided

Important:

For Students below 18, a Guardian needs to sign a Waiver on their behalf.

Refund Policy

  • Please allow 5 business days notice to reschedule a booking. A $45 fee per student will be required to reschedule after this time.
  • There will be no refunds for day of cancellations and no-shows.
If you are visibly intoxicated you will not be able to participate in the class.

This was such an awesome class! Scott is a great teacher. I came in to the class without any idea how to weld, but Scott explained and modeled everything so well that I was comfortable with everything right from the start. I had a great time and plan on returning.

Decent class. Two instructors/monitors - Paul and Jayrod. Both are friendly, professional and knowledgable. Paul opened the class with introductions and explained, "this is about all the talking we will do" - Great! (If you would rather DO welding than chat about welding, this is the class for you). Both instructors were constantly there, milling about, looking over your shoulder, offering advice. When I had a question, I just had to look up - one of them was usually close by, and would walk over. The focus is on antendees going home with a complete steel cube. You are working almost the entire time. They could go with another belt sander, but we improvised with a grinder. The shop is a working shop. It is a safe work environment, but it is not overly clean. It is a typical metal shop - expect the bathroom to be servicable but not overly clean. Other reviews commented that the jackets had not been washed in a long time. I thought they were fairly clean, and since you are wearing them as a coat over what you have on (to keep the sparks from burning small holes in your clothes) I thought it was fine. They provide rubber and leather gloves. Gloves were clean enough, but good luck finding anything larger than size small/medium. I pulled an OJ and forced my hands into them. Welding helmets are decent enough. I went to the class to learn how to weld "better" - my welds often look like crap and I have trouble welding thin stuff. While the class was fun (and I'm going back for another), my only con for the class was that when all was said and done, I ended up welding about 18" total - not really enough to improve technique or get feedback. The stock was heavy square stock - I could have stick welded it and probably not blown through. This is not really a con for the class - they want everyone to be successful in going home with a cube and not a piece of swiss cheese. The class is great for someone who never welded before, and you will leave with a decent understanding of the basics. I run a REALLY cheap flux core welder at home, so part of my goal was to try out "better" equipment and see if it made a difference (it does). The neighborhood looked sketchy on google, but turned out to be fine. Car was safe outside and we had no problems.

The instructor was completely not prepared for the class. We spent the first hour just talking about random stuff, eventually, I had to be like "ok I want to weld now". He didn't have the parts ready for the class to weld. And WORST OF ALL, it was extremely dangerous. We have high power lines jacketed with pressurized gas behind each one of us for welding and the instructor tripped over one of the cables as drone was welding. It's a miracle they didn't burn themselves.

Really good instructors, very safety conscience, good fun. I have a lovely cube now. Excellent intro adventure into how to weld and what is welding. Enough beginner welds to improve as one worked. I would like to spend some time learning wire speed, voltage, and how it corresponds to gauge of the steel, but I suppose this would be beyond a beginner. So this left me wanting more advanced classes. Thank you for the time the instructor and assistant took!

Paul was a fantastic instructor. Patient and passionate about what he does, he displayed a wealth of knowledge tying in all kinds of information. My friends and I had a great time and it all flew by so fast. I'd highly recommend this class. Just fair warning that long grinding times definitely leaves some temporary soreness and loss of nerve sensitivity in your fingers.

This was an informative and enjoyable intro to metalworking class. The instructor and assistant were very knowledgeable, gave clear instructions and were great teachers. My only constructive feedback would be to provide students with some background reading material or Youtube videos ahead of class (I think this would be helpful for someone like me who has zero background knowledge) and have the opportunity to practice tacking and welding a bit before trying it on the actual cube. Overall, I had a very positive experience and look forward to trying the TIG welding class next.

Question from Michaelo C.
Hello! I see some classes are too full and half the students don’t get around to welding or finishing their project let alone fine finishing. Has that been addressed? Also is there a day or time that is the smallest of all classes with the most effective instructor? Thank you
Answer from anonymous
We do our very best to give our students an exceptional welding experience. Rarely have we had an issue with someone not getting to weld or completing their project. Our cube class you can expect to weld for at least 2 hours. We have 5 MIG welders, 4 TIG welders, 2 band saws, plenty of hand tools and safety gear and 10 Auto Darkening Miller Welding Helmets. Class sizes are typically limited to 6 depending on the class. All of our instructors are effective.
