What you'll learn in this dye class:

Please join us as we welcome spring through a celebration of indigo as a natural dye and an ink for screen printing!

Attendees of this two-part workshop will learn the basics of dyeing fabric and apparel in an indigo vat, and creating ink from indigo that can be used to screen print custom images on fabric. We will culminate this workshop by each contributing a patch, to a collective quilt, to be sewn together by anyone who wants to participate.
  • In our first three-hour session Nica Rabinowitz, founder of Fiberhouse Collective, will teach participants how to obtain rich blue hues from the indigo plant through the ancient process of indigo dyeing. Participants will learn how to set up a sugar indigo vat. We will explore shibori resist-dyeing techniques and have the opportunity to dip dye locally sourced cotton shirts and textiles.
  • In our second three-hour session Rachel Sipser of Bushwick Print Lab will walk participants through the process of hand-drawing and/or collaging their own design, creating a screen, mixing ink with indigo and a couple other natural dyes, and printing with these inks on the naturally dyed fabric from our first session (those who did not attend the first session will be printing on raw, undyed fabric).
Sessions can be attended separately, however we recommend attendance at both parts of this workshop to get the most out of this limited series! Those who participate in both sessions walk away with two naturally dyed and printed shirts and five naturally dyed and printed patches (with the additional possibility of dyeing and printing a limited number of one’s own apparel/textiles) + the Bleeding Blue zine about indigo.

At the end of this workshop, Rachel and Nica will collect one dyed and/or printed patch from each participant to be sewn into a collective quilt. Attendees are welcome to join Nica and Rachel at a craft night on the evening of Wednesday April 18th to help sew this quilt or work on personal craft projects. Rachel and Nica will be available to answer any remaining questions and provide instruction/guidance if needed.

Wear clothes you do not mind getting blue!
