What you'll learn in this other kids camp class:

This medium-sized part, with open, sunny habitats, as well as wooded areas and a small wetland, is ideal for finding the first edible wild plants of early spring. And this event, co-sponsored by Down to Earth Farmer's Market, will give you the best opportunity to learn about, collect, and enjoy these common, tasty, renewable species.

A short demo at The Farmer's Market will familiarize you with some of the best in-season species. Then we'll head off in the park. In open, sunny areas, we'll be finding common- and long-leaf plantain, garden "weeds" loaded with dozens of biologically active compounds that are great for a variety skin irritations. Rub the crushed leaf repeatedly on a fresh mosquito bite for 15 minutes, or example, and you'll be cured. You can also roast the leaves with crushed pine nuts, oil, herbs, and white miso to make chips far better than kale chips.

Sunny areas should also provide super-nutritious chickweed, which tastes like corn, lemony-flavored curly dock, intensely bitter dock, and common dandelions, which taste like lettuce on steroids. Two early-season mustards may also be present: Mild-flavored shepherd's purse, and hairy bittercress, with a delicious spicy flavor similar to watercress.

Plenty of edibles grow in partially-shaded areas along the edges of wood and trails. We'll be looking for garlic-flavored field garlic, as well as garlic mustard, We should also find day lilyshoots, which taste like spicy string beans.

Roots are also in season. We'll probably find sassafras in the forest. The original source of root beer, the outer layer of the small saplings' roots make a great culinary seasoning, unknown to chefs. Burdock root, a staple in The Far East, will also be ready to harvest.

A highlight of the tour will be the first cattail shoots of the year, which grow in the pond and nearby mud. The peeled stem tastes like cucumber, but much better.

If you want a taste of early spring, this tour is for you!

  • Participants should be dressed for the weather, and be aware of very bad subway service. Trains are often canceled due to track work.
  • No sandals (there are mosquitoes, thorns and poison ivy). Everyone should have plastic bags for veggies and herbs, paper bags for mushrooms, which spoil in plastic, containers for berries from late spring through fall, water and lunch, and extra layers when it's cold. Digging implements and pocket knives are optional.
  • Dogs are permitted. Children are encouraged to attend.
  • There's no smoking whatsoever at any time.

School Notes:
If you can't attend the class you signed up for, please call or email "Wildman" Steve Brill a day before the start of the class. No-call/no-show creates an inconvenience to all participants since we can’t tell if absentees are having transportation issues, and this delays the start of the tour/class.

Kindly note that price posted is our suggested donation only.
