The Chord of Nature

The Greek doctrine of ethos expressed clear ideas about the structural elements of melody, harmony, and dissonance, and their profound effect on mankind’s “sonic core.” Mankind’s musical compass is the harmonic series or “chord of nature.”  The proximity of music’s structural elements to this “chord” determines its viability as music, and its power to heal.

This workshop will draw on musical insights from both the ancient and modern worlds that derive from the “chord of nature.” Modern physicists have recently discovered that modern string theory defines this chord of nature as the mathematical basis of the “Theory of Everything” — the most ubiquitous structure and powerful organizing force in the universe. Plato believed that the ancient predecessor of string theory reaches into the vibrations of a person’s soul, their character, the city, and society in general. We will survey the evolution and impact of music’s structural elements on our health from the time of Plato to modern day hip-hop. We will also learn to leverage this inner resonance to “flip the switch” and stay quiet within the hypnagogic state amidst the daily bombardment of our nervous system
