Eileen Johnson is the Founder and Creative Director of FlowerSchool New York. She started FlowerSchool New York in 2003 after having been the Director of Outreach for the Children’s Scholarship Fund, the largest privately funded program in the United States for students from grades K through 8.

She had previously worked in publishing and has had experience working for magazines as varied as Cosmopolitan and Gourmet. In addition to magazine articles, her published books are “The Art of Floral Arranging: Learning from the Master Florists at FlowerSchool New York,” “Entertaining in the French Style” and “Tropical Flowers.”

I took the Flower Shop Tour on 3/21/14. It completely exceeded my expectations! We started the tour with champagne and mingling at the Flower Shop--a beautiful location on 14th St, conveniently located just outside the subway station. The staff were gracious hosts, making sure that each newcomer was greeted at the door, given a tour of the shop, and then introduced to a conversation partner. People from all over the world and country were on the tour; I had no idea how well the school was known in the floristry world before signing up! After about 30 minutes, we all piled into the van to start the tour. The tour was amazing! We visited five different locations--including some studios that are closed to the public. Many of the designers work with some of the most famous people and fashion houses in the world! Every place was nice and gave us an idea of the different kinds of clients and work environment we could expect for different business models. We got lots of information on what it takes to run a business, get clients, and develop a personal style--in addition to a few tips on flower care and design. Lunch was fabulous at a very upscale location. I really hope I can join the school for their European tour that includes the Netherland and France in the future!
