Phil Rabovsky

Teaches at Shoestring Press

Phil Rabovsky was born in the frigid capital of a crumbling empire in January of 1987. At the age of four, he moved to Upstate New York with his family, where he grew up in the small towns around the Finger Lakes. After graduating from Columbia University in 2009 with a degree in Art, Philosophy, and Linguistics, Phil took a brief hiatus in Budapest before resettling to Brooklyn to start a career as a painter. He is a member of Shoestring Press in Crown Heights, where he exhibits, teaches, and collaborates with other artists. Influenced by John Berger, Joseph Kosuth, Judith Butler, and other names that start with J, Phil's paintings poke at the intersection between bodies, language, power, and the art tradition. Combining a love of language with a passion for old master painting, his work teases out the hidden meanings that have accumulated around the human body.
