Yuri Leonov has always been interested in the relationship between nature’s course and the constant attempts by human beings to influence it. Frequently, his work attempts to link its conceptual content with its formal qualities, usually through surface treatment, dictated by the specific demands of the subject matter. The symbolism contained within Leonovʼs work tends to pull from art historical references ranging from ancient mythology to architecture.

Leonov was born in St Petersburg, Russia where he showed a unique talent for art at a young age. In his adolescence he moved to New York where he later received his Bachelors in Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts. His work has been shown in multiple galleries across Brooklyn and Manhattan, including Skylight, RH and Dacia Gallery. Yuri also hosts the weekly figure drawing session on Saturday afternoons at Muchmore’s in Williamsburg.
