Gilles Clement

Teaches at New York Botanical Garden

Born and raised in a farming area of France, Gilles Clement is a gardener, designer, botanist, ecologist, entomologist, and teacher at the Versailles national School of Landscape Architecture. As a teen-ager, a severe exposure to his father's highly toxic rose spray put him in a coma for two days, an experience which changed his direction as a designer of landscapes and precluded his future use of chemicals in the garden. He has gained international attention for this philosophical writings about gardens as well as his inventive designs. He consults and makes gardens all over the world, and is most well known for his designs for the Parc Andr‚ Citroen in Paris, which he designed with Alain Provost and for the novel landscape surrounding the Mus‚e Branly.
