How-to: Draw a Horse in 5 Easy Steps

Whenever we need to know how to draw something, we turn to Simon Levenson, seasoned drawing instructor and creative brains behind Drawing New York. Here, he unpacks the technique behind illustrating your favorite equine friend.

Step 1: Draw Three Round Shapes

Notice how each shape is a little different. The one on the left represents the powerful chest of the horse, which is pushing forward. The one in the middle represents the large “egg-like” shape of the ribcage. The one on the right represents the powerful back thighs that propel the horse forward.

Step 2: Draw Three Triangular Shapes

A horse has a large head with strong neck muscles that run from the skull to the body. The head can be represented as a modified triangle (for now)—round at the back and square at the front. The ear is another triangle facing forward or upward, depending on the action you want to show.

Step 3: Draw Two...Cones?

You can see how our basic shapes need to be modified a little to represent the horse’s legs. The joint on the back leg is slightly higher than the joint on the front leg. Notice how thin the front leg is. It is one of those little details that make a horse so “graceful.”

Step 4: Go to the Ground

The lower leg will be modified quite a bit when we finish our drawing. For now, we can simply draw straight lines down to the two triangular shaped hoofs. Notice how the hoofs change direction from the leg. Fun Fact: The entire lower leg of the horse is its “hand.” The hoof is the equivalent of the fingernail of one finger.

Step 5: Details, Details, Details

Notice the “egg-like” rib cage had been curved on top. Look up as many different horse references as you can online for inspiration, because getting the face right helps prevent it from looking like a dog (trust us). Horse anatomy is well-known, and has been documented in many excellent drawing books, so grab yourself one. Or better yet, get yourself in front of a real horse and draw!
