Discover the Best Furniture Making Classes in Los Angeles

Creating something from start to finish using your hands and tools is a great experience. Furniture making allows you to start with one or two pieces of wood and create a functional piece of art. While that can sound intimidating, there are many levels to learning this skill. You can learn how to make small pieces of art to go as far as becoming a designer; it all depends on why you choose to learn furniture making.

Why You Should Learn Furniture Making in Los Angeles

Learning a new skill like carpentry, including making furniture, can have some great benefits. Living in Los Angeles, you can meet people worldwide; why not plug into a larger community by learning a new skill? Taking a furniture making class allows you to connect with another community of people and feel connected. Whether at a new workshop, convention, or a local group, a skill like furniture making can be very niche, and connecting with people with an interest can be a unique way to make friends. If you aren't necessarily looking for a way to make new friends but instead looking for a new hobby, furniture making can also be that for you. Hobbies are a great way to reduce stress and make good use of your free time. Many describe furniture making as challenging but peaceful. It is a way to use your hands and connect with a piece of art, a great stress reliever, and a vital component of a hobby.

Furniture making is also a great side hustle, separate from a hobby. A hobby is done just for fun without the intention of making money; once you start selling pieces, it becomes a side hustle. This could be a place to start if you are in the market for something on the side. Selling pieces at local art fairs, to friends and family, or taking orders for pieces can be a great way to build a client base and get some extra income. You may have other reasons for wanting to jump into furniture making, whatever the reason, it is a great time to learn, and there is a benefit in starting.

Once you've completed the beginner's course, you can move on to Woodworking - Intermediate/Advanced. The intermediate course is meant to enhance the skills learned in the beginner's course, which is a prerequisite or equivalent experience. Students can expect to learn elementary joinery adhesives, simple production techniques, and wood finishes while taking their hand and portable power tool skills to the next level.

The William Ng School of Woodworking is another excellent school in Anaheim, California, offering accelerated courses focusing on the finest woodworking techniques. When taking a class here, you will be taught by award-winning instructors in a new facility. They offer a variety of woodworking courses for all skill levels. If learning to build a bench is on your list, consider the Roubo Bench Build course. Students in this intermediate-level class will learn to build a good workbench that is built to last. Students will learn construction methods such as making large mortise and tenons, cutting angled square dog holes, milling, gluing, and assembly. The course requires early registration so the materials can be ordered in time for class. Perhaps learning to build a rocking chair is something else you've considered; the Malook Inspired Sculpted Rocking Chair advanced workshop is another great option. Like the Roubo Bench Build class, the focus is the journey of making the furniture. Students will use a grinder and power carver to help shape the seat and different parts of the chair. The class will move at a fast pace, and the goal is to complete the joinery and have the seat carved and chair assembled by the end of the course.

Finally, the Faux Masters Studio in Yorba Linda, Los Angeles, is a studio that offers training workshops for all levels. Faux Masters is affiliated with Hoppe Brothers and Sons, which is dedicated to teaching the art of faux finishes and decorative painting. Furniture and Cabinetry Finishing is a great course that teaches you how to add finishes to your existing pieces. Virtual Furniture Making Classes

Taking a class online can be pretty beneficial. For example, you can attend class from anywhere, have access to more classes, and there is no driving and parking to worry about. However, while these are all great benefits, some virtual classes can be challenging. For example, when taking a course online, you typically must supply your materials. Providing your materials can be particularly difficult for carpentry classes that usually require power tools and materials. However, don’t let this deter you from considering a virtual course in furniture making as there are some offered where needing your materials is not as costly.

For example, the Virtual Wood Burning (Pyrograpy) for Beginners course requires a Walnut Hollow Creative Versa tool and additional wood pieces. The Walnut Hollow Creative tool is at most $30 on Amazon, a lot cheaper than most power tools. The class teaches students how to use the woodburning tool to create wood burned effects in their designs. Students can expect to learn how to prepare the wood, transfer the design, worth with the different nibs to create the artwork, add lettering to enhance the piece, and use watercolor and colored pencils to finish.

The New York Botanical Garden offers an In-Progress Portfolio Critique class. While this is not directly related to furniture making, as an artist, receiving feedback on your work is vital; that is just what this class provides. With a supportive teacher, students will receive an evaluation of any art projects they are working on by the group and teacher-led demos. While this class is tailored to drawings, it’s a great way to get feedback on your designs.
