Before your next travel adventure, learn how to use your smartphone camera effectively in the field. This hands-on workshop is designed specifically for smartphone photography enthusiasts exploring locations around Washington D.C., celebrating our joint 25th anniversary with the smartphone camera industry in 2024.
Modern smartphones deliver remarkable imaging capabilities: sharp photos, precise exposure, high resolution, built-in computational photography, and sophisticated depth of field control. The newest models include powerful editing features for adjusting brightness, cropping, increasing color saturation, and enhancing contrast. Most current phones cover focal lengths equivalent to traditional 16mm to 200mm lenses. Personally led by professional architectural photographer and Washington Photo Safari Director E. David Luria, this specialized workshop teaches you to unlock your phone's full potential to capture memorable travel photographs.
Topics covered during the 90-minute field session include:
- Proper smartphone grip techniques for maximum photo sharpness
- Candid and posed portraiture with people, children, and animals
- Architectural and landmark photography with buildings, monuments, and historic sites
- Indoor photography in challenging lighting within museums and galleries
- Strengthening cityscapes, landscapes, and nature imagery composition
- Evening and nighttime photography strategies
- Composition principles applied to smartphone photography: rule of thirds, framing, leading lines, and foreground elements
- Slow motion, hyperlapse, panorama, and creative techniques
- In-phone editing functions to enhance your photos
- Using a specialized Bluetooth smartphone bracket with a finger-activated shutter, tripod socket, and built-in charging
After the orientation covering travel photography fundamentals, we'll photograph throughout D.C., including Lafayette Park, the White House, Albert Einstein Memorial, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials, Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, Washington Monument, and Union Station. The session concludes with interior photography techniques for large spaces without flash equipment.
E. David Luria, a professional architectural photographer and DC area resident for over 50 years, has directed training for more than 41,000 amateur photographers since founding Washington Photo Safari in 1999. Any smartphone model works, but newer devices offer expanded capabilities.
