Class Description

Description

This course provides a critical examination of the interconnections between climate change and the practice of photography, with particular emphasis on photographers' dual role as both documentarians of environmental transformation and contributors to environmental impact. Throughout the course, participants will contemplate the ecological consequences of photographic activity, including considerations of equipment manufacturing, material production, printing processes, transportation and travel, data storage infrastructure, and exhibition practices; while simultaneously studying how photographic images influence and shape public understanding of climate-related issues and phenomena. By engaging with lectures, scholarly readings, illustrative case studies, substantive critical discussions, organized field trips, participation in environmentally conscious printing techniques, and comprehensive project evaluation, the course cultivates more conscientious, ecologically aware, and ethically informed approaches to creating and sharing visual narratives within the context of a changing global climate.

Available to photographers of all skill levels, the course integrates theoretical study, critical analytical thinking, and hands-on practice, with explicit focus on implementing environmentally accountable photographic processes and printing methodologies.

A materials fee of $20 is included within the total course tuition cost.
