Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this calligraphy class:

Calligraphy is a millenia-old art form, with its roots in both Eastern and Western cultures traditionally used for illuminated manuscripts and formal writing. Modern calligraphy spurs from this by using both new and traditional tools: it’s a more free form style of writing that maintains the elegance of traditional calligraphy while allowing for more self-expression.

In two sessions, our calligraphy jamMaster will introduce you to the basic techniques of brush and pointed pen calligraphy and guide you through exercises to enhance your skills.

This workshop series will focus solely on pointed pen (also called dip pen) calligraphy. In order for you to develop a strong formal introduction and understanding of the tools used in calligraphy. This workshop serves as a foundational course upon which other skills can be built.

Curriculum:

Session 1: Basics and Lowercase Alphabet
  • What is modern calligraphy?
  • How is it different from traditional calligraphy and hand lettering?
  • Introduction to pointed pen calligraphy
  • How to prepare a nib for first-time use and how to put the pen together
  • Practicing with a straight pen holder
  • Discussion about the importance of pressure in calligraphy
  • Practicing the 8 basic strokes, which you will use to form letters of your own
  • Practicing lowercase alphabet
  • Practice connecting letters and review tricky combinations
Session 2: Pointed Pen and Connections
  • Practicing uppercase alphabet
  • Tips and tricks for various types of ink and paper
  • Learning basic flourishing techniques
  • Making greeting cards using your preferred method
  • Learn how to make guidelines for calligraphy and how to apply these to envelopes
  • Distribution of resources list for further study
This class is beginner-friendly; no experience necessary! We will have all the supplies and materials ready for you. During in class exercises you will create a name card, several greeting cards for friends and family, and fun envelope art.

You will also receive a brush marker and dip pen (with nib!) for you to continue practicing at home. And in case you are left handed, lefties are welcome to attend class!

This class is especially good for people who love hand lettering, want to use calligraphy in their upcoming nuptials, or already know how to write letters and would like to learn the basics of traditional calligraphy.

Also, we are BYOB friendly, so bring a drink of your choice.
School Notes:
We are BYOB friendly! Crafting is paired best with your favorite drink of choice! But, you must be 21 or over. Younger? Just have a mocktail. No one will notice ;)

I wish the instructor spent more time going around the class and watching us as we practiced so that we could get feedback. A lot of the time were just watching her write on the screen and we would get a couple minutes to copy. That being said, I did get some good tips and my writing improved!

Very helpful for a beginner like me who was always interested in calligraphy but didn't know where or how to start. Instructor was very knowledgeable on the various types of tools and styles, in addition to the history and current trends of modern calligraphy. Provided practice sheets for the 8 basic strokes, additional drills, the alphabet, and sample phrases. Also gave lists of resources for the supplies we received, where to buy them, instructional books, and online communities. Lots of opportunities to request focusing on specific letters and words I was struggling with. Usually the instructor's approach would be to ask us to first watch her demonstrate writing, then practice for some period of time. While I am glad I had plenty of time to practice in-class, I would have appreciated more detailed explanations for the mechanics in using the pens (grip, alignment, pressure, etc), and more detailed feedback on my work. Still, this course was a great jumpstart introduction to modern calligraphy.

The first class was good, the second was ok, and the third was bad. While I liked the idea of going around the table and introducing ourselves in the first class, I did not expect/like it to happen in the following two classes. As a result, we had to spend a lot of time talking and very limited time learning. The instructor was able to cover brush calligraphy and pen calligraphy but we didn't have much time practicing the latter. In the third class, the instructor was ~10min late and nevertheless asked us to spend the first 1.5 hours telling stories about our names and sharing thoughts -- we were left with 20min creating our envelopes (main task of Class 3) so most people were not able to finish it. If your main goal is to make friends and share your calligraphy experience, this class could be a good fit. But if you are new to calligraphy and/or actually want to learn more about it, you might not get a lot out of it.

While Danielle was knowledgeable and I left knowing more than when I walked in, class time was NOT well utilized. Too much time was spent on ice breakers and other things I certainly didn't pay for. All the projects she had for class were always tacked on at the last 30 to 20 minutes of class. I never had time to complete my greeting card or address my envelope. I was looking forward to the intermediate class, but will not attend because I fear class time will be spent on ice breakers and potlucks. Just spend more time on actual practice not chit chat!

I wish this class had more instruction/practice time and less icebreakers/talking time. I felt rushed at the end of classes 2 and 3 to finish what we were working on. With that said, the instructor was very nice and friendly. She shared many resources and tools to help us develop our personal calligraphy practice. I think it was a good value compared to other calligraphy classes i've seen. I think the concept of CraftJam is great!

Great class, well planned with enough flexibility to tweak in response to those attending. Super excited to take my new skill forward! Loved that they had all the materials we needed, there was no scrimping and saving.

On the plus side, I was introduced to the use of brush pens and pointed dip pens, to lettering on and decorating envelopes, and to various tools and resources for more learning. The instructor was enthusiastic and interested in making sure we had a good group dynamic and had fun as well. She is a skilled calligrapher, and she was generous in explaining how she developed her skill. On the minus side: I would have liked clearer, more specific guidance on how to hold and move the pens. The instructor did not really address most of my specific questions and issues: she just repeated her phrases and wasn't able to elaborate in different words when I didn't understand. I also found it not at all useful to have her look at what I had written and point out where it was faulty and where it wasn't, because I could see that for myself: what I needed was guidance on modifying how I was using the pen to produce a better result. Repeating "It's all about pressure" and the like didn't accomplish that for me. This is a common problem in crafts instruction: too often, the teacher shows and tells you WHAT to do, but can't give a clear explanation of HOW. I've had classes with skilled craftspeople who were also good at teaching, but it's pretty rare. Overall, I learned enough to figure out my own answers with practice and with the help of books and on-line resources. So I accomplished what I wanted to do with this course, which was to get a start on calligraphy. The location was a mixed experience. There did not appear to be any way to buzz CraftJam from the street door, so in order to get in you had to be let in by an employee or duck in when someone else exited. Also, the table we used was very cramped for the number of people in the class. The room was, however, well-lit and airy, and comfortable in other respects.

Question from Ranjeeta B.
If I cannot make one session, would I be able to make it up?
Answer from Jenn C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi! We advise that students select a series where all dates can work. The sessions must be completed in order, so if you miss the second session, you must switch the entirety of the sessions to the new group. Of course, we understand that things come up and rescheduling cannot be avoided last minute sometimes. However, with prior knowledge of other commitments, we advise students commit to what workshops that fit their availability.

Answer from Angelica B. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Lorena, if you locate the date selection a little bit down the page you should see a line that says "This course consists of multiple sessions, view schedule for sessions." - drop that down and it will show you the number of session/s of the class.
