This intro course is for absolute beginners or for people who studied French years ago but need to brush up on the basics.

Together, we'll cover:

  • The present and simple past, and when to use avoir vs être
  • Basic grammar including articles, gender, plurals and prepositions
Each lesson will also include in-class conversation practice and real-life situations such as talking about yourself (job, home, family, likes and dislikes), shopping, and ordering in a restaurant.

Note: The beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate courses follow the same textbook (not included in the course price but available to students for the discounted price of around $18).

Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Jeffrey! Yes, there is a textbook for purchase at a discounted price of $18. This is available on the first day of class. Thank you!
Question from Jeffrey L.
I prefer the Thurs classes but unable to attend the final class on Feb 20th. Is there testing or required attendance on this day?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Jeffrey! There is no testing or required attendance on the day of the final lesson. It is largely a review of what was covered during the course, so it's not a big problem to miss it. Hope this is helpful.
Question from Anonymous
I don’t have any idea about to speak French but things change in my life. I’m a pastry chef 2 times a year I have to travel to Paris to get the same class for a party. My question is, will this class help me?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Yes, it would. This is a beginner French class and also focuses on conversational French. They have speaking practice in every class and the students practice real-life situations. Thanks.
Question from lindsay c.
Hello I'm trying to sign up for french class starting January 8th and I already have a plan to fly out on 29th, so I won't able to attend. Would it be possible to attend another day of the week after or before? Please let me know Thank You Best, Lindsay
Answer from Kristle C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Lindsay, The provider have makeups but they do provide a syllabus on the first day that details the topics covered and corresponding pages in the textbook and related homework, so students can keep up if they have to miss a lesson. Hope that helped!

This is a great class for people who want to have fun and learn casually. I basically grinned ear to ear for the full time I was there, which makes me a big school geek. The class is fun, and the instructor is compelling and thoughtful. He teaches a general use standpoint, rather than academic....clarifying when something is incorrect but people will understand, vs incorrect and native speakers will be confused. It is absolutely not an immersion structure. He explains things clearly in English, and then has you practice. ...I've tried an immersion Beginner French class and I was completely lost. To me, having English language discussion to clarify foundational concepts helped a lot; the tradeoff is you spend less time listening and speaking. (The instructor does strongly advocate to spend time listening to french outside of class). The only frustration is that everyone was coming in at a different level. Half of class felt like review, but the other half was stuff I never understood in my past French class, and was very eager to learn. I think this is inevitable in a beginner class, and probably evens out in the higher levels. I'm not sure how Idlewild's courses will track for folks looking to become fluent; I'm guessing to some extent it depends on the person. My plan is to work my whole way through Idlewild's course levels as a foundation, and then see where I'm at.
