What you'll learn in this bike training:

Discover the natural world in the midst a thriving urban industrial park on this bicycle and walking tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where we will explore New York City’s waterways, terrestrial ecosystems and urban farms. At the stunning 65,000-square-foot Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm, we will learn how they produce thousands of pounds of vegetables annually – as well as honey and eggs – and are a national leader in the development of rooftop and urban farming techniques.

Descending to the bank of the East River, we will visit an oyster restoration project led by students from the New York Harbor School and will discuss the improving health of the city’s waterways, and the challenges that remain.

We will visit the historic Naval Hospital campus, where we will identify plants and trees, both local and exotic, that have sprung up on this largely undeveloped site, making it a haven for birds and insects. We will also discuss plans for a memorial park at the site that will become part of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. This tour will reveal that the natural world truly is all around us, even in the heart of the city.

You'll need to provide your own bicycle, safety helmets, and bike locks. A portion of this tour is walking, and you will need to lock your bike when we visit the rooftop farm. We'll meet at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and exact meeting instructions will be sent the day before the tour.

Refund Policy

Note: This provider has a temporary cancellation policy for COVID-19 related cancellations which is as follows:

I'm currently offering credits for any cancellations made seven days or fewer to a class starting. I can't afford to do cash refunds right now, but credits are fine if the spot is canceled any time before the start date (even if less than 72 hours). Spots that are canceled more than seven days before the class starts are eligible for cash refunds.

 ----

Original cancellation policy (non-COVID-19):

If you're looking for a refund or class credit, you need to back out of the class a full week before it starts. (No exceptions!) We know it's draconian, but since we aren't charging an arm and a leg and have to buy all our materials in advance, it's kinda hard to deal with last-minute bailings.

We also can't transfer registrations to a future session of the class. Sorry!

Instead of dropping out if you have a schedule conflict, a better idea is to ask around and see if any of your friends want the spot. We can't give you a refund less than a week out, even if there's a wait list for the class.

Regarding bad weather, we generally only cancel classes if the subway system stops running. If traveling during snowstorms might be an issue for you, please take this into account before registering for a class.

Long-Distance Hiking the Catskills

at Brooklyn Brainery - Prospect Heights 190 Underhill Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11238

The Catskill Mountains are by no means among the tallest peaks in the U.S., but their rounded slopes and rocky outcrops are ideal for scenic vistas, remote camp sites, and multi-day rambles for both novice hikers and experienced bivouackers. More importantly, they're close to NYC and easily accessible by car, bus, train, bike...
