The worldview of the great 19th century American Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson was strongly influenced by Advaita, the ancient Indian “non-dualist” philosophy that addresses the fundamental unity in all things, the oneness of God, the soul, and the universe. Tonight, Emerson scholar Barbara Solowey will draw from Emerson’s writings, especially his master text, The OverSoul, to explore this highly influential thinker’s understanding of Advaita, which grew from his deep immersion in Indian philosophy, including the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. His vision of transcendental consciousness is one that can restore modern humanity’s bond to the natural world and to the Eternal Self.
