Jenny Carolin

Teaches at Shoestring Press

Jenny Carolin received her Masters in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting from Syracuse University, and her Bachelors in Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design. A background in ballet and the desire to find movement and expression in two dimensional work led her to expand her practice to include performance, video and installation. She has taught Figure Drawing, Foundation Drawing and Drawing and Painting for Non-Art Majors for the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Currently she is the Director of Shoestring Studio and a Co-Founder of the Mudhouse Artist Residency program in Crete.

While the teacher of this class is very nice, she is not very experienced. This class is held at shoestring press, a small artist studio in Crown Heights. The bathroom in the studio was consistently dirty. As for the teacher, I'm not sure what teaching experience she has had in the past. I know the bio that was posted indicated she had an advanced degree in drawing or art. The class usually started with a brief lecture on different styles of drawing. However the rest of the class was spent drawing nude models and attempting to emulate the photos shown earlier. I didn't find this useful, as there wasn't enough time spent on teaching students the fundamentals of drawing. I basically felt that the teacher was regurgitating whatever she had learned in her own art classes. The classes could have been better structured. For example she could have structured the series to focus on different parts of anatomy or different aspects of drawing. I would not recommend this class or this studio. I've taken classes at Brooklyn brainery and the art students league, and the teachers there were more organized and professional.
